One of the attractions of the M3 is it's quickness and speed. And since the 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times are so often cited as the measuring stick, I will post all such times I comes across in publications, and personal experiences.

If you have other sources please post them here.

Ok here are some 0-60 numbers I ran myself using the GTechPro a couple of weeks back. Only ran 0-60 and probably wasnt "scientific" in my approach so Im sure it's not the fastest this car can do or maybe it's optimistic because of the equipement etc. I figured the best way to gauge the car would be to run a couple of other cars using the same equipment. My brothers' CLK430 and '99 M Coupe.

0-60 (measured using GTechPro; temp 85 (approx))

2001 E46 M3 (in Sport mode/DSC off/launching at around 1500 rpm with just a "chirp"):

Run 1: 4.98
Run 2: 4.72

1999 MB CLK430 (auto/traction off/just punching it/alittle more wheel spin than the M3):

Run 1: 6.18
Run 2: 6.22

1999 M Coupe: (ASC off/launching around 2500rpm/about 10 feet of rubber):

Run 1: 5.84
Run 2: 5.72

I only ran two runs as the car had less than 1800 miles at the time. Would love to hear what other people are running with their M3's. I couldn't believe the 4.72! Obviously I kinda messed up the first run.

Ian I dont really know how accurate the GTechPro is...probably the only way to know for sure is to use a GPS to calculate? I have read that they can be alittle optimistic. I hope my times aren't optimistic as I've seen faster numbers by quite a bit. But the numbers for the CLK430 seems awfully fast...I dont recall seeing numbers like that for that car.

Btw, we ran the car at an empty office complex parking lot on sunday...dont want to endanger anyone else's cars or lives but our own!

I recently took my 01 M3 to the local drag strip here in Maryland and ran the following times. Keep in mind that this is an old track and normally the times are slower versus much better tracks like MIR as well as lower altitude tracks.

13.5136 @ 105.3195
2.0557 60 foot
5.7427 330 ft.
8.7814 1/8 mile

Obviously the 60 foot time is lousy as I only had time for two runs that night. Launching the car is very difficult, too much throttle, nothing but tire smoke, not enough, big pause then veroooommmm. The mile an hour is saying high 12s. I'm not pursuing anymore outings as my real drag car is receiving it's new 1000hp single turbo 331ci engine next week. Let me know if anyone else has figured out the launch and maybe I'll try just once more. You can e-mail me at Ziff@aol.com or 01m3@AOL.com.

I just tried a couple runs last night with my 02 m3 cab. Hard top was on. This is my first time trying. Launched somewhere around 2000 rpm and my best time was 5.29s. I think i may be able to do better with more practice. I tried one 1 1/4 mile run. the launch was somewhere in the high 5's. I got 13.96. How do u launch at those lower rpms without bogging the car. I want to beat my chipped s4 times of 5.01 and 13.68.

The way I launch the car is to turn of DSC (ofcourse) and turn on sport mode, let the rpm rest at around 2000-2500 rpm and let off the clutch to the engagement point. The wheels might or might not chirp then slip out the clutch and at the same time feed in the throttle. You shouldn't been spinning your wheels too much. I was able to leave a 300+ Audi S4 in the dust using this method. Oh and I did that twice. It needs a bit of practice. Good luck. Let me know what time do you get.

I've read that the SMG II launches at 3500 RPM for the optimal launch. Don't know how much difference from manual it would be.

Frank, you need to compare the M3 to a CLK 55. The CLK 430 is not match to the M3. Does anyone in this forum have any info on the CLK 55 vs the M3 Coupe?

Car and Driver published an article comparing the M3 and CLK55 in June 2001. Here are the 0-60 and 1/4 mile quotes about each car.

Quote regarding the CLK55
"As the revs rise, the engine's voice changes from a muted burble to a stirring small-block snarl, catapulting the car to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds and through the quarter-mile in a healthy 13.6 seconds at 106 mph."

Quote regarding the M3
"As it does, the M3 pulls like a demon, passing the 60-mph mark in 4.7 seconds and tripping the quarter-mile lights in 13.4 seconds at 106 mph."

You can see the full article at: http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/comparisontests/2001/June/200106_comparisontest_coupeconflict.xml?Manufacturer=BMW&Name=3-Series&class=43

I have a 95 M3 5 speed Cosmos black and a
97 M3 5 speed Technoviolet. Both running Michelin Pilots and both with stage two from Dinan and a little extra touch from dad when he visits. The 1995 is hitting 60mph in 4.7sec with top speed of 170mph and the 1997 is hitting 60mph in 4.5sec with top speed of 180mph. This is also with two 80lb sand bags in the 1995 and stereo and video equiptment in the 1997 for the 0-60 times. My next step would have been a 2002 M3 coupe but my brother-in-law beat me to it. The last thing I want to here is "copy cat", especially when I like to be on top. Now instead I picked up a 1999 M3 Convertible White which is going to the operating table now as we speak down in Florida. As for the CLK 55, no chance. The automatic is tight but a 5/6 speed would bring its time lower so it could be more competitive.

What is the 0-60 time for a 2001 BMW M5 DINAN? I went up against one today and did not leave him until 110+ mph. Thanks Dennis Kimball. 2001 RT/10 with Lethal 500 package. Headers, high-flow cats, and Corsa 3" catback exhaust. Also , how much $$ for a 2001 M5 and the DINAN supercharger upgrade?
Thanks again, Dennis Kimball
