Just got the 1200 mile break in service. The only thing done was change in differential fluid; was told that the fluid that comes with the car is a special break-in diff fluid and could damage the transmission if left in the car too long.

Also, noted some vibration in the steering and a clunking from the front suspension. Was told that the vibration was most likely from a balancing issue and they could do it but that balancing was not covered under warranty. Since I had just had the wheels balanced from the purchasing dealership the a couple weeks back, decided to take it back to them for this issue. Stopped going to the purchasing dealership because their service dept damaged both of the E46 M3's! The second one was taken HOME by a dealership employee for the night! All without my knowledge or consent!

Anyway, regarding the clunking from the front suspension, was told that BMW is aware of the issue and are working to find a fix. Was told that BMW had issued a "Red" bulletin which means the problem is being worked on. Was told that they would call me if and when BMW comes out with a fix.

That's about it from the 1200 mile service. I was talking with the service advisor and he said that the Z8's have to be sent to Spartanburg to fix any body damage because there is no shop in the country that can do the work on the aluminum body. Thought it was interesting.

Hi Frank.

Congrats on your Forum. I just started visiting today. I live in Melbourne, Australia and am the proud owner of an E46 M3 in LSB/black with 19" wheels, SatNav, 6-speed conventional manual etc.

I was interested in your info re. the 1st service as mine is just due - did theynot change the engine oil ? Also, your comment about repairing the Z8 was interesting .. would this also not be the case for the hood on the M3 ?

Regards,
M3Frank.

No they didnt change the oil. I asked about the switch to 10W-60 from 5w-30 and they said they had no notice on it yet.

Figure I would wait for the formal word. They should do it for free I would think.

Good point about the hood! I wonder what's the deal with the hood...maybe they would just replace it completely if it gets damaged as I would think it would be cheaper than shipping it back to wherever it needs to go. I will ask next time I go in.

Thanks for visiting!

I too got my 1200 mile service over the weekend. I asked them about the 10W60 oil thing and they didn't seem to know about it. I just had them replace the oil and filter anyway. (138 bucks).
