Has any magazine anywhere in the world tested an M3 with the SMG II option? If so, which one was it? If the 0-60 times for a 6 speed are in the 4.5 - 4.8 sec range, then with the SMG II it must be somewhat faster? Does anyone know any data? IP: Logged |

BMW says SMG can change gears in as little as 80 milliseconds, quicker than any, but a few, mere mortals. This should result in at least a 0.1 to 0.2 second reduction in 0-60mph time. More importantly this reduction will happen consistently and even with inexperienced drivers. Nonetheless I haven't seen any non-BMW documentation confirming this reduction. Let's just hope I never have to drag race someone with SMG II - I have a distinct feeling I can't shift the regular 6-speed that fast! HiFiMan IP: Logged |

I wish I had waited for the SMG II! Is it just me or is the E46 M3 6spd alittle difficult to launch? there seems to be a slight hesitation on initial throttle...also if i blip the throttle while parked the rpm drops to below 500 rpm and then comes back up..almost wants to die. Hifiman does your M3 do this? blip the throttle and see if the rpm drops back down and maintains a steady idle. O btw, just posted some pics of my brother's Alpine White M Coupe in the gallery IP: Logged |

Not too far off! What color combo did you select? I first loved the Imola Red/Blk but after awhile it got old FAST! The Alpine White/Imola Red I think is the best color combo personally...sporty and rare. I think alot of cars will go to SMG or some derivative of it; even read that the next generation mustang will have something along this line. I can just imagine a day when people will say "it's one of those old cars with three pedals"! You should register with the Owners Circle at www.bmwusa.com O yea, just picked up a '01 Boxster S! Definitely not as fast as the M3 but handles beautifully...I hate to say this, but I think handles better than the E46 M3...seems more precise in it's execution. Will post some pics when I get a chance. Happy motoring! IP: Logged |

SMG II sounds nice but after I read about it at www.bmw.com I'm starting to think it's not so great. The idea that I got was that the SMG II is just a fancy and sporty way of saying the car is automatic. I personally think the shift paddles on the steering column will get in the way. Yea, SMG II will make your M3 perform better but at what cost? It's gonna feel like you're driving an automatic. The reason I got a M3 was because it came only in manual giving me the feeling that I'm actually involved in driving the car and making sure it performs at its max. Unless SMG II can give me a SIGNIFICANT plus in performance (ie 0.5 or more reduction in acceleration) I would opt not to go for it. IP: Logged |

I cant wait to see some tests on the production version. I doubt it's going to make a .5 sec diff in acceleration to 60 since there's only one shift to that speed. But I think it will be better than a manually shiftable auto like the tiptronic. Seems like it's a highly anticipated option for alot of people though...I hope that says more about the SMG tranny than about the M3 drivers. IP: Logged |
