I need some advice. I know this is a tough question. I have had my name on the list for about a year for a Coupe and they still tell me about another year for the car. So I figured if I wait I can get the SMG. However, I got an email from another dealership that they have a 2002 model M3 convertible available for late October, early November delivery. I don't have any choices on the convertible, it is a titanium silver with black leather interior and black soft top. Whatever the person who ordered wanted it has on it (CD, HK System, Cold Weather). The thing is that the convertible is a manual. I have been reading the board and everyone is talking good things about the SMG2. What would you guys go for the Coupe with SMG and wait period or convertible with stick and get it within 2 months?

Tough choice! Depends on what you are looking for I guess; personally, I didnt want the convertible because I wanted the maxium structural rigidity for this car. The E36 M3's had quite a bit of chassis flex; not sure about the convertible but it cant be as stiff as the coupe obviously.

Also, depends on your driving skills. The E46 M3 manual is not the easiest car to drive; at least for me anyway. I have driven stick for some time and feel Im pretty good at it; but I find that my Boxster is much easier to drive than the E46 M3. The clutch on the E46 M3 is not very forgiving.

I have heard great things about the SMGII; and I think this transmission will allow "normal" drivers to extract the maxium enjoyment out of this engine. Plus I have heard that it will double clutch or "heel and toe"on downshifts as appropriate...very cool. About the only reservation I have is whether it's as fast as the manual. I have read that theres only a difference about 100mph. But have to see the tests.

Btw, the SMGII production for U.S. starts in november 01 I think.

I know it's not really an answer, but hope some of this info will be helpful in your decision.

Either way, you really cant go TOO wrong.
