I've noticed quite a few people placed deposits on there M3. From what I make of the dates you placed those deposits I'm guessing you made a deposit during negotiations. You should never, ever do this. The dealer is trying to pull your strings. I'm not trying to make those who placed deposits look incompetent but I have a friend who owns a Mercedes and Honda dealership so I know a little bit about how deals work. You should never put down a deposit during negotiations. If you feel the dealer is putting pressure on you to agree to unreasonable demands walk out and contact another dealer...even if they are 3000miles away from where you live. Most, if not all, dealers deliver cars/trucks from other dealers in order to satisfy there customers for free. Of course, the usual 500-800 destination fee applies. Remember, dealers have the power to charge whatever price they want but the customer has the power to walk out at any time they want. IP: Logged |

Good advice xtsym3! The thing with the M3's though is that there really is no negotiations when you put down a deposit. As long as it's a reputable dealer and you know they are not charging premiums, it should be fairly safe I think. No matter how much you negotiate, they are not going to sell the M3's for below MSRP (at least not in the current situation). I would just verify that the price will be MSRP. If you are trading in a car, you wouldn't be able to negotiate the trade in value until about a week before the car actually comes in. So, they can get you here if you are trading in; my advice would be to try to sell it before the car comes in. You can print a trade in value from a numerous auto sites but you will most likely not get the price shown on those things. I put my deposit down about 2 yrs before the car came in and when it did, picked it up for MSRP. Traded in a 1999 C5 vette, and got about $1500 less than what was shown as the trade in by some auto sites...still about 75% of what I paid for the car. If you are out west where there seems to be some crazy premiums, you might want to get everything in writing about getting the car for MSRP. Just my .02. happy motoring! IP: Logged |

In regards to deposits. This will be the second car I have purchased from this particular dealer. My deposit was actually just to get in line for the next available M3. I will purchase my car for MSRP...no premiums. According to the dealer, I should be optioning the car out sometime in April 2002. I put my deposit down in April 2001. There is no doubt in my mind it will be equipped with a conventional 6 speed trans. I thought I wanted Imola red until Frank posted the Alpine white. Eight more months of agonizing.... IP: Logged |

Hi Scout The Alpine White is gorgeous! I swear it's so white and brite, particularly with the chrome grill and side vents, that it attracts bees and butterflies (they just fly around it like they think its a big flower)! The Imola Red looks the fastest standing still but it kinda got "old" after about a month. Plus trying to keep swirl marks off the car was impossible (one of the reasons I went with the AW for the second one). Plus all of BMW's race M3's are white...I think. The Topaz blue looks pretty good but I think swirl marks will be more visible on that color as well. What's weird is that in the spec survey on another part of this site, Alpine White is one of the least picked colors! Check it out here: IP: Logged |

I did the same as the others here - put a fully refundable deposit down to get on the wait list. There was no negotiation of price, other than the dealer telling me they charge MSRP, no more, no less, and I just nodded. When I'm ready to option the car out and get a production number, then and only then will I negotiate price (which will probably be MSRP). I still have the option to 'walk out' of this whenever I like and keep my deposit. And believe me I have a list of alternatives to the M3 that I know would also make me happy, so I am always prepared to walk and get a different car if the dealer starts playing hardball or games with the waitlist (i.e. selling my spot to someone else willing to pay a premium). It's a reputable dealer and does a lot of volume, so I'm not worried. But I will be keeping an eye on them. IP: Logged |
