So with 9,127 miles my engine decided to self destruct and spit a rod out the drivers side of the block. I will say that I do drive my car quite hard regularly, but I did not over-rev the engine, and it did have the approiate amount of oil in it, and I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them yet, and if so, are they blowing up for one particular reason? did you get your oil changed before it happened. this probably has nothing to do with it, but just asking. my car has close to 5000 miles and the car is saying that i should have it changed at 10,000. i don't think i drive it hard compared to other guys on this forum. is it because a maybe my oil amount has dropped? i will check my oil level today, thanks IP: Logged |

what year is your car? i heard the 01's may have weak crankshafts. i dont know much about the bottom end, so maybe if the crank is weak or out of balance, it could be the reason that this happened. sorry to hear about your car. hope its fixed soon, and maybe the dealership can give you a better idea why this hapened. post any info you get from them, because im sure many people will want this info. ------------------ IP: Logged |

yes I have already changed my oil once already. I did it about about 5,000 miles using BMW oil and their Filter. I work on cars for a living, and I cant see haveing a high end sports car and following BMW's recomended 15,000 service intervals, I would however recommend for warrenty reasons that you went to BMW have them do it for you, or go to then and Buy their oil and their filter, because the car is designed to work with those prodcuts. Maybe you downshifted while going too fast and it caused the engine too spool up too fast. IP: Logged |

sorry to hear that! i've heard of couple of others blowing. not sure if 01 or 02. i think the cause was as 1990beevil explains above....probably going from 6th to 3rd by accident. still no excuse for such a high performance car. good luck. IP: Logged |

when the Engine Blew I was full throttle in 4th gear, no over-revs, or miss shifts. If someone over-revs this car by missing a downshift the computer throws a check engine light and codes out the computer, so you have to take the car to a Dealership, and they actually have to send the computer out to BMW in Alanta, and they check it out and then reset it and send it back, so If I had over-reved my engine at anytime, I would not have been able to continue driving. And as for right when It blew, like I said earlier, I was foot to the floor in 4th gear. IP: Logged |

All of this talk about blown engines is really beginning to worry me... especially when it sounds like nothing wrong has been done to the car to cause this to happen. Opinions? Ideas? Suggestions? IP: Logged |

Speedi - there is realy nothing to worry about. as long as you follow the maintenance schedule and do not miss a shift (if 6 spd), you will be covered by the generous warranty. if my motor goes, i hope i throw a rod through the block so there is no debate on fixing or replacing the motor. oh - make sure you have your phone with you at all times so you can call roadside assistance. Speedi, think of how many cars have had blown engines compared to the number of cars that are on the streets... There is really nothing to worry about IP: Logged |

I think there is something to worry about, since the cars are 2 yrs old or less and have very few miles. How many failures do you expect at this rate (car should last 150k miles at least...) IP: Logged |

wat i meant was.... If BMW builds 10,000 M3's, and one or two engines blow, there are 9, 998 good engines. Engines can blow, and it sux when it happens to u, but just because you have heard of 2 or 3 engines blowing doesnt mean that all of them have a tendancy to do so. -Stevencldr IP: Logged |

as steven says, it could just be a goofy engine, there will statistacly be so many out of tolerance parts no matter what you do, It just happens, like a pie factory that makes every 2000th pie with double the filling (pie on the brain, dam diet). IP: Logged |
