I have a 1999 M3 with 36,000 miles. I have taken the car to the dealership in order to correct a noise coming from the rear right. They told me that the shock tower was cracking where the shock mounts were located. They said that it was NOT covered under warranty, but they fixed it at NO CHARGE by welding the cracked area and adding an additional metal plate. The problem is the left rear is now making the same noise (2 days after the right side was fixed)....HAS ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM???...IF SO WHAT HAVE YOU DONE ABOUT IT?....BTW...THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN RACED NOR HAS IT EVER BEEN TAKEN TO THE TRACK...I HAVE 36K HIGHWAY MILES. PLEASE HELPPPPPP!!!!

I just had both my rear shock mounts replaced at 26,000 miles. It was not covered under warranty but ran about $300 - $400 total. The dealer attributed the problem to the rough streets of San Francisco. Hopefully the replacements will last longer. I would suggest that if you can afford to do it don't mess around with temporary fixes and just pay to replace the mounts. Good luck.
