hi. i am looking at m3s and i have found a 97 and a 95. while looking at aftermarket parts i saw on some items the divinding line was up to 95 and 97 parts were not always associatted with 95's. is there a big difference between the years? it doesnt seen to have changed on the exterior. any info would be greatly appreciatted.

thanks in advance

The 95 and 97 M3s appear the same but the engine and computer are different. The 95 M3 runs off of a 3 liter 240 hp engine with ODB1
computer. The 97 M3 uses a 3.2 liter 240 hp engine with an ODB2 computer. The difference in computers is that ODB2 can be reprogramed.
On a 95 m3 you can replace the engine chip, but on a 97 you just rprogram it. thats about all i know the difference is.

95 with OBD1 has a bigger intake manifold and is a much better car to upgrade. Can add 3.5" HFM which gives a good jump in power.

The chip in a 95 can be reprogrammed but dont have to send away the whole computer to do it. They send u a chip and u take the old one out and pop in the new one.

96-99 M3 are OBD2 and the chip is an eprom, which is soldered to the board, so that is why you have to send out the whole computer to do the reprogramming. They actually reprogram your exsisting chip.

The bumped it up to 3.2l because the OBD2 regulations cut down the power, so they went 3.2l so they can get dat power back.
