I thought I'd give members of this forum some info on potential problems with M3s that are tracked frequently. We all know that the water pump on pre 10/96 build date cars must be replaced at 60,000 miles and most of us know that the radiator, thermostat housing, and fuel pump must be replaced at about 80,000 miles. However, for those of you with cars you track, you should know that your engine is subject to combustion chamber blow by. Traditional leak-down or compression tests will not disclose this problem because it only occurs at track rpms. You know you've got the problem when you've replaced all the usual items (mentioned above) and still find you're coolant's spraying into the engine bay after a track session. The car will still run fine on the street but the problem worsens on the track to the point where the engine overheats and blows. The good news is there's a fix. It's not cheap but you'll have to replace the head gasket with a "bite ring head gasket". BMP (no connection whatsoever) has a good German "performance head gasket". This should bullet proof your car. Hope this helps.
