I have a 1995 M3 with 36kmi.(Recently purchased from original owner)Upon cold start,it has a rattle coming from entire length of engine.A bit more pronounced around 1500 rpm.Completly goes away when temp. is up to normal.BMW says this is normal, caused by the different pistons installed in this car.Is this a fact or fairy tale???? My car is a `94 M3 and since new it makes a similar noise to the one you are hearing now. Your car, as an US version have a diferent vanos system but the cilinder head configuration is the same. So, the problem is when you start the car the engine oil takes some time to reach the valves wich are hidraulic and the oil needs the operation temperature to be ideal. When the noise disapears it means that all engine parts operated by oil pressure are ready to operate in their normal conditions. In euro cars such as mine, the vanos system also creates a ratlle when the engine starts due to the lack of pressure in this system. In my opinion that is nothing you should worry about because it can also depends on wich type of oil viscosity you use. Eduardo. IP: Logged |

Can't say that I hear a noise but my 98 runs a little "rough" upon a cold start and runs great after warm up - guess I've come to understand that this is normal. Not to get off the subject, but noticed your member name - what do you av8 in? I av8 quite a bit myself. Mark IP: Logged |
