Listen to all of you who know what a real car should act like, write back. I need som info on a beast. What year is most recommended to buy, in the sense of which has the least amount of problems and has been improved upon. Please don't say 99 thats expensive. Ok guys and gals, drive hard, make me proud and answer the question. Your dear friend.

if you are going to mod the car go w/ a '95 they have the OBDI computer and are easier to get more hp from then the '96-'99 OBDII computer...

common probs of the '95 are the water pump...so make sure to check into that before purchase

And, IIRC (and if it matters to you), I don't think the '95 had the active stability control.

I was trying to find back issues of reviews each year that the M3 came out. Trying to see if something important wasnt on the earlier models that came out later. I thought I read that up until the 97 there is no middle consol, or anything. Is that true? can one be put in? just wondering

I had a 95 E46 M3 and it did not have the middle console. But that's easily installed.

What's more important is that 96 on it had the 3.2 litre engine if im not mistaken. Plus the wheel/tire combo is different from 96 on. I think it had 225 and 245 for 96 on vs 245 all the way around on the 95.

I think they initially had some issues with the engine management chip for the 96 on cars which was later corrected...I think all of them were reprogrammed or something...not exactly sure but Im pretty sure they were corrected.

The major option would be the luxury package. It was about a $4000 option in 95..think it was reduced considerably for later years.

The 95 for me was a great car. Never had any problems and the dynamics were fantastic. Im sure same for later years.

Hope that helped some.

Actually, it did. Another question I had is how many miles typically should I stay away from if buying a used one. Ive seen some on autotrader with 97k. Do you think it would be better to drop in a newer engine? If so where could I go about that? Any chance of transplanting the euro spec?
