Well, arghh.. I just typed out a long message but I forgot to type in my password, so i lost it. I'll just type in a brief recap.

I am looking to buy an M3 convertible or coup in early 2002, but I have not really done much looking and research yet. However, what shocked me was that a friend of mine just told me that the new M3's are out of stock and/or backordered for a couple years and said that dealers have begun to auction them off, drastically raising prices. As proof, he told me that his friend had just purchased an m3 for 125,000. I know this huge price tag is more for the m5, but i'm sure he said m3. I was just curious if this was indeed true, because if so, chances are I won't be able to get one because the normal price tag is already pushing it for me. Can someone provide me more info on this? And if there is indeed an out of stock scenario, would it be solved by early next year?

On a side note, can someone tell me how much I would expect to pay for an m3? I haven't done much research, but I'm pretty sure i'd want it with a luxury package and upgraded sound system. I'm thinking 45 to 50 thousand. Am i completely misinformed?

Take this coming from a 99 TA owner, also looking at getting a 2002 or 2003 M3. Your friend is full of it. If you want to spend 6 figures for a BMW get a Z8. Don't buy an M3 for more than 60k. Don't buy an M5 for more than 90k. M3 are on back order for more than a year. You can buy a new M3 from many sellers on EBAY for around 60. These are the facts as I know them.

Look at the bright side though. Not only will they worked out the bugs, but you will also be able to get an SMG II in your car (hopefull thinking) by the time you can get one.

I just put a deposit on a 2003 M3 and I heard that BMW plans to double in M production in 2002. Has anyone else heard that?

I did not pay a premium on either of the two E46 M3's that I purchased. If a dealer tries to charge you a premium or tries to force you to take dealer installed "accessories", I would try to find another dealer. Only reason you should pay a premium is if you "gotta" have one "right now"! You can probably find a couple dealers that have their demos for sale for around $5000 above MSRP...demos for 2001 were Laguna Seca Blues..and that is why you see so many of that color on Ebay.

If you go to any reputable dealer and put your money down, you should be able to pick one up at sticker...just have to wait.

Btw, has anyone noticed that the TMV (market value) of the 2001 M3 on edmunds.com has decreased where it's now within $300 of the MRSP (still above MSRP). I thought I remembered seeing it once when the difference was close to $3000. The premiums on these cars should disappear by next year I would think...similar to the Honda S2000...was looking at one about 6 months ago and couldnt find one in town for less that $40000...called today and found one for $33500. Those people who paid that $10k premium took a hefty loss within a short time period.
