I have recently been shopping for a 2002 M3 conv in the Los Angeles area, and so far, all of the dealers have been telling me I have to pay a $5000 premium on the sticker price due to its limited availability. Has anyone else come across this, or is this something all dealers are spouting to make an extra buck? This has been consistent across several dealerships, although some have hinted they are willing to take $4000.

Here in NY M3's are selling at list. Some dealers have a 1-2 year waiting list and some dealers have almost no waiting list.

On October 5th I put a $500 deposit to get a spot on the waiting list at the dealer in Hartford CT. The price of the car was the MSRP, no premimum markup. The sales person informed me that some dealers in California are purchasing the cars themselves and then increasing the price for resale. I am currently #15 on the list. Can't wait!! Good luck on your search.

Try the Pacific BMW in Glendale. You will get close to invoice price! Remember, we are now in a buyers' market. Recessions is the keyword.

However, please be aware of the problems that the new M3 is having.

Hello - any leads to a dealer in NY who can sell at list or even lower? AND with a reasonable wait list?

Yes, Try Competition BMW in SmithTown,Long Island, NY. www.competitionbmw.com They have several 2002 M3 Coupe's. Last I checked they have 2 M3 Coupe's and 2 M3 Convertables. Also, they have a large allocation. You will pay list price.

Rodney, thanks for the heads up. Did you get your M3 there? I sent them an email inquiring about a Sept 2002 delivery. I was told that a Sept 02 delivery will be a 2003 model. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the feedback so far. Just to let you know, I have been contacting more dealerships in the Los Angeles area, and pretty much across the board, dealers are demanding $3000-5000 premiums on top of sticker when ordering a custom build M3 convertible. At some dealers, I have gotten them to verbally admit they "can do $2000" above sticker. Also, I am seeing quite a few 6-gear models on lots, as many buyers are now looking for the SMG models.

So, I have not yet seen a dealer to offer sticker, but I will continue to search and negotiate. Will keep you posted.

I think the Los Angeles dealerships are cheaper than the ones in Irvine and Buena Park and Alhambra. They all require a 10,000 dollar premium!! I recently went to Shelly dealership in Buena Park and they wouldn't let me test drive the car and required me to pay 10,000 more! Obviously, I didnt buy the car...
