Anyone of you in the market for the 2002 M3? What is the current wait list period? Dealership in Connecticut says 2 years. Are 24 months that long in your area?

I was in close contact with Greenwich BMW and Darien BMW (in six months I only moved a few positions on the list) and both have long waiting lists, ie 1 1/2 to 2 years. Neither dealer gets more than two M3 Coupe's a month. That is why I found a new dealer -- Competition BMW in Smithtown, NY

I've also dealt with Competition Sports in Greenwich CT. I purchased our 2001 530 Sport there and they are a good dealer. But when I asked about an M3 they gave me the same 2yrs, $5000 over crap. It kinda makes me sick, I mean do they really have THAT many people on a list? I know that Habberstad on LI has 2 Converts and 2 Coupes on the lot that I'm sure you can get at or near MSRP. Also Westchester BMW is the "Factory" dealership in the NYC/Metro area and I'm gonna check them out early next year and see about European delivery. Munich is one of the most clean and beautiful cities in the world, and the Bavarian Alps are breathtaking. Good luck guys. Steve

Rodney thanks for the heads-up. Got in touch with dealership in Long Island (Competition BMW). A lot of dealers are calling me back confirming a lot of M3 coupe cancellations due to the economy. Waiting time may not be that bad after all. Happy Holidays!

Hey Steve, $5K over MSRP? That's b_llsh_t! Two years wait list on top of that....not good at all. There is this dealership from Jersey (Turnersville) who do business on the net. We were told that they negotiate from invoice so they can move inventory. Not sure though if it applies to the M3 coupe. Will let you guys know. Happy Holidays and may 2002 bring in your new M3!!

Steve,

I know exactly what you are describing with the Greenwich dealer. Do NOT buy your M3 from them.

I bought mine from Hassel Motors in Freeport, they are great. Call George Kildoyle one of the Sales Managers there, I waited about 6 months to get mine, believe me, I researched almost every dealer in the NYC/LI area and these guys were always MSRP, while the other dealers were demanding 10K more!

That's who I have my order with - Hassel Motors in Freeport. They seem to be pretty decent. I placed my order in August and originally told me about a 1 year wait at MSRP, which I was fine with. I called them up a few days ago for the status, and they told me it looks like I should have my car in the Spring, with a chance of March if there are some cancellations before the next allocations in February.

Bruce - I think I may have seen your car. Is it Laguna Seca Blue with a vanity plate?

I live in Long Beach, BTW. I saw an Imola Red coupe yesterday in Long Beach too. Don't know if either of these were yours.

Hey Bruce, thanks for the input. I called Competition Cars of greenwich, CT to inquire abt the 2002 M3 Cabrio and the guy (will not mention names but first name begins with a "J") said that it will take 24 months wait list. And there is this switch and bait to make me get the 330CiC instead (don't get me wrong...its a beautiful car too) since the M3 is too fast for me and that the wheel changes for winter will be a bummer. My heart tells me to go M3. But this guy says 330CiC. But then, who is the customer?

Steve, BMW of Manhattan is also another "factory" dealership. Got a few emails from them informing me that an M3 coupe is avaialble due to a cancellation.

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone talked about European Delivery for M cars. Do the discounts apply? I actually have good travel connections so it would be significant savings plus if I take my wife to Germany it would make the purchase go SMOOTHER ;-)

The BMW USA website for some reason leaves out the M series. Maybe they're not in the program? I know that the Zs and the Xs are not available since they are built in South Carolina.

I availed of the Euro Delivery Program of Mercedes in 1997 and I really had a blast. Got to visit the factory in Sindelfingen, had a free dinner and saved on hotel and car rental costs. I'm sure you and your wife will enjoy the Munichen experience.

I asked my salesman about it when I left my deposit, but he didn't seem to have a clue about it. He looked at me like he was puzzled why I would even think about it. The dealership had no literature on the European Delivery program either. I wasn't too impressed on that front. The dealership must lose out somehow on the Euro delivery deal.

I'm having second thoughts about it for two reasons:

1) The break-in procedure on the M3 is very strict, and I think would limit a lot of the fun of driving the car in Germany on the autobahn, etc.

2) The expected delivery date of my car is very fluid - it keeps changing from month to month. This makes booking air and hotel reservations difficult (as well as budgeting my vacation time from work), especially since I'm trying to use my frequent flier miles for first class air.

M3 Buyer - you are right. The dealer makes more money if the car is shipped to the US brand new. I am not sure of what happens at the US customs but if you take delivery using the Euro delivery program, its like the factory shipping a used car. Thus probably the spread of MSRP over invoice is greatly diminished.

If I were you and you said you have the time to do it, pick it up it Munich. The Black Forest is awesome...so is the autobahn.

Well, if anyone is looking for an M3 in Southern California, there are two really good dealers here. Irvine BMW and Sterling BMW both have a lot of allocations for customizing M3s. I ordered mine from Irvine October 30th and am getting it in the middle of January 2002. I cant wait, in fact the people at Sterling have 3 in stock as of right now. Good luck to you all.

What ever happened to the "no swearing" admonitions in these chat forums? Anyway, I was at Competition Motorsports in Greenwich CT yesterday and all of you are dead wrong. I was able to place an order for an M3 Coupe with no premium over MSRP. Yes they have a long wait list for the M3 Coupe but the attrition rate I was told is 40%. I will be getting mine in October 2002 as a 2003 model. Test drove the 2002 "beast".... a totally different animal from the 330 model. Feliz Navidad a todos!

La Maquina, I am suprised to here that you were able to get MSRP.(happily) We picked up our 530 in August and it was then that I was told that it was 2yrs and $5000 over. Maybe the economy has alot to do with the 40% drop rate. Who was your salesman? Mine was Jim S.

I would never purchase another a car from Competition Sports BMW in Greenwich, CT. I bought my 1997 328i (certified pre-owned) from them, and they neglected to tell me the car had non-BMW replacement parts (the trunk was replaced, right rear quarter panel damage -- repainted). They said there was no damage to the car, and the previous owner was a regular customer. To make matters worse they gave me a bogus vehicle history report. It was a report from similar car and I did not notice the VIN #'s did not match.

I purchased my new 2002 M3 LSB Coupe from another dealer...

Steve, my client advisor is John Tuccillo. He also said that the reason for the 40% attrition wate was that the BMW factory will increase production of the M3s. Hopefully I can get a production number soon! Cheers to the New Year.

FYI,

I live in NJ, and when I was ready to put down a deposit for the M3 back in August 2001, I called almost every dealer in the state to check on the wait time. Most the them were willing to accept a $1000 deposit, and I was told by most that the wait time is anywhere between 6 months to a year. Only one dealer Difeo BMW in Tenafly, NJ told me he can get me the car in five months. So I put down a $1000 with them on Sep 7th, and guess what....I got my car in three months. I paid MSRP and nothing more. Took delivery Dec 11th and it's been wonderful. I don't know if I was just lucky to have the car so fast...but I do know that BMW has increased production on the M3 since November

If anyone in the NY, CT or NJ area is interested in placing an order, give Steve Patterson a call @ 1-800-866-1539 extn 246, and tell him you spoke to Rocky.

Good luck.

Irvine BMW wants 5000-10000 over sticker for their cars AND they won't let you test drive.

I went in, cash in hand (check) and they wouldn't sell for MSRP.

Not only that, they wouldn't let me test drive the car until AFTER I signed the paperwork for it... They said if I didn't like it, they'd reverse the paperwork.

I was dressed properly and arrived in a car that was MUCH more expensive than the M3 I was looking at...

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind - I may be moving to Irvine within the next year. I should have my new M3 before I move. But I'll still keep that in mind for the service aspect. I hate dealers with bad attitudes.

Then call Global Imports in Georgia... fly out here, pick the car up, and drive it back to California.

They have 2 SMG cars going for $54k and $56k MSRP + ($5k to $10k) + Gas Guzzler to take one home. They are all yours.

If you're willing to travel and are flexible about colors and options, you can probably get a car at MSRP today. If you're willing to travel and are picky about colors and options, you can probably order one and have it by April or May at MSRP.

They have them sitting on the lots down south. If you have to order one, like I did yesterday, it will arrive in 4-6 WEEKS.

I was looking for an M3 Convertible and called all the dealers in CT. Found 2, and bot the one with the SMG. Some people don't take delivery on orders from last year, and I think this happens more often than dealers admit. Dealer in North Haven has a silver one right now.

Long Beach BMW in Long Beach California doesn't go over MSRP and they had several in stock at the time I purchased mine. 4 had 1000-3000 miles on them for a discount off the original MSRP. Mine was $48k when new. had 1,800 miles on it and bought if for $46K. Only option was leather.

Both Habberstad and Rallye have just recently quoted "normal build time (6-12 weeks)" and MSRP

I'm in Atlanta, and just ordered for a March build and late April/early May delivery. I got on the list last April, and was told 18 mos to two years. I'm thinking lots of people dropped off the list, and they called me in 10 months. I'm paying MSRP. Dealing through Hank Aaron BMW.

As I mentioned before Competition BMW in Smithtown, Long Island gets a generous allotment of M3's. Currently they have 2 M3 Convt's on the lot. You will pay MSRP. You can contact Bob Bellucci 631-265-2208.
Good Luck.
