I need to replace my rear (245/40/17) MXX3 tires. Unfortunately as many of you probably know Michelin has discontinued this tire. I have heard mixed things about the new Pilot Sport which is replacing the MXX3. I am also looking at the Bridgestone Potenza S-02 Pole Position. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have a Dinan supercharged '98 M3 and my priorities are for dry performance, noise level and wear.

At 37K miles I just put a third set of tires on my M3. I didn't go thru them that fast, I just took a nail in one of the rear tires on the second group.

I've owned the OEM Michelins, Bridgestone S-02 Pole positions, and the current set, Dunlop SP9000s.

My favorite are the Bridgestones; for dry performance, wet performance, and fairly good noise and wear levels. The Dunlops are the quietest of the group, and so far have much better endurance than the others.
(Michelin: 16k miles front/18k rear)
(S-O2: 19k front and rear)
(Dunlops currnetly have 12k and the tread level is still pretty deep - I guess at least another 12k in them).

The Michelins stunk in the rain (had a couple of scary hydroplanning moments at highway speeds),and were noisy/stiffer riding. Both the Bridgestones and the Dunlops do well in the wet, with the edge going to the Pole Positions.

If you only care about dry performance and not noise, wear level, or price, go with the Michelins.

My next set will be the Pole Positions. Check out Tirerack.com reviews - good stuff!

Thanks for the input. I actually called the tirerack last week and at the advice of one of their salesmen, who drives an M3, I bought the Pole Positions. I'm glad to hear that my choice was probably a wise one.

i have the bridgestone pole position s-o3 and they are great. i'm not sure on how they will last since i've only had them for a month. but nice handling tires. i also hear the kumho ecsta are excellent; great track tires due to stickiness and price.
